I’ll Be Back

AJ gave me call today wondering when there was going to be another First Crack podcast. Thanks AJ!

The answer – Soon. I hope. I’ve been working on a new podcast receiver app, which is eating up all my podcast production time.

Then there’s the bit about needing some new inspiration. There’s something new fermenting. I’m excited about it, but more excited about what I’m calling a ‘feed curator’.

Until then, I’ll be posting at garrickvanburen.com and on Twitter.

Frys Should Sell Home Coffee Roasters

Joyent ps pipe grep #16 starts out discussing home coffee roasting. Then they dig into the regular übergeek stuff.

If they keep this up, I’ll just do an .htaccess redirect from the First Crack podcast to Joyeur. ;)

Another great quote from the podcast:

“Ruby is Java for people that hate Java.”

  6. Bad Camping Trips
  7. Unexpected Experiences with Licensed Characters
  8. Trust

I’m Not Here to Make the News

“One thing I’ve noticed about talking to certain types of press, particularly mainstream, is that they have a pattern in mind before they write about something, and the better you conform to the pattern the more coverage you get.” – Matt Mullenweg, Automattic.com

I did a little writing for my college paper. At the time I was there, the editors had a handful of stories they thought should be covered. The local movie theater using high-fat buttery oil on popcorn, for example. I didn’t. That’s not interesting, it’s annoying. Matt’s comments make it sound like quite a few people haven’t grown out of it.

Often when I too get calls from the press, it feels less like they’re reporting and more like they’re covering their ass on some fiction they just wrote.

Or just plain missing the interesting story.

When I turn the mic on someone for this podcast, I don’t know where the conversation will lead. I trust the conversation will be good, that they’ll share something interesting. Whether or not they do is up to your ears.

Solving Math Through Podcasting

With apologies to all the godcasters, the “Nine Wives” episode of Numb3rs uses a religious leader’s podcast to track him down.

I can’t believe how many times I heard the word “podcast” used in bad dialog….and this is after I was baffled why they didn’t have an iPod in the Prius.

Crazy TV.

Absolute Thanks

Friend of the podcast Sam Buchanan reminded me the First Crack Podcast got a mention in George Colombo‘s Absolute Beginner’s Guide to Podcasting.

Screenshot too. In the section on the benefits of using a weblog engine for handling listener comments and such.

Thanks again George.

Pinger + Podcast = Common Sense Mobile Podcasting

A while back, I had this idea for mobile podcasting, along the lines of my ‘podcasting as mass voicemail’ mantra. Even picked up a domain name.

Thing is, I don’t know enough about how the mobile phone industry works to make it a go. No problem, looks like Pinger.com is on it.

If I, as a Pinger account holder could request an RSS feed to be pointed at my mobile phone number – Bingo, common sense mobile podcast receiving.

Yeah, rather than having my home pc download mp3 files, I could receive the podcast as a voicemail. Sure, this puts a time limit on the podcast – not a bad thing.

BTW – Pinger is funded by, Kliner Perkins, the same people funding PodShow, Tellme, Audible, Friendster, and Segway. So, hopefully, they’ll see this “synergy” as well.

Help Me Look Back on a Year of the First Crack

In celebration of First Crack’s first birthday, I’m putting together a show looking back. Since I’m way too close to it, I’d like you to tell me what you like and dislike about the podcast, what your favorite episode is and which ones were completely un-listenable. Send over all those hurtful and heartfelt statements you feel when you hear my voice. Think of it as a best-of and worst-of the First Crack Podcast as declared by you.

Email text and mp3 audio comments to: firstcrack@gmail.com.

You can also leave a voicemail by dialing 206-20-BEAN-1.

Yes, I’m asking for it. All the ugliness. Send it over.

Under the Weather. No Coffee for a Bit.

Hi all. My apologies for the lack of updates. Some sort of virus put the smack down on me earlier this week (it’s going around). My head feels like a bowling ball and the thought of talking hurts. Worst of all – I haven’t had coffee since Tuesday. Tea. Lots of tea and lots of tasty Green Goodness juices.

Jen just listened to Jon Share His Geo, and she said she liked the format – me being between you and the interviewee. Less eavesdropping and more This American Life-esque. What do you think? 206-20-BEAN-1 or email.

Thanks for sticking around. I hope to bring you another heavily caffeinated episode early next week.

In the mean time, check out something else I’ve been working on: WishRSS – it turns Amazon WishLists into RSS feeds.

Alright. Time for more tea.
